One-To-One Mentoring

All children need special adults in their life to serve as role models, listening ears, and to provide supportive guidance. Many children have these needs met through parents, grandparents, coaches, day care providers or teachers. For other children, an additional special person can be a crucial link in fostering emotional, social and educational development.

Our One-to-One Mentoring Program promotes a supportive, one-to-one relationship between adults and children. The mentor-mentee relationship facilitates a child’s education and social and personal growth. The mentor takes a younger person under his or her wing and offers advice, support and encouragement.

Is It For Me?

If you are a child or adolescent, between the ages of 8-18 years old, reside in Westchester County and are currently receiving services through MHA of Westchester, this program may be for you.

What We Deliver

Mentors are adult volunteers who provide the nurturing, guidance, challenge and inspiration which are so needed in children’s lives.

Mentors visit with their mentee on a one-to-one basis and engage in fun, interesting activities together.

As educational supports, mentors can help children academically by increasing their sense of competency, skill levels and performance. In addition, mentors assist in emotional and social development. This is accomplished through consistent friendship, support, sharing of experiences and role modeling.

Where

Mentors pick up their mentee at their home in Westchester and take them on outings. Typical activities may include: taking walks, going to neighborhood parks, going over homework at the library, seeing movies, visiting museums. Activities are determined by the mentor and mentee.

When

Mentors visit with their mentees bi-weekly or weekly and spend a few hours together. Visits are arranged and agreed upon by the mentor and parent or guardian of the mentee.
