- LTCOP seeks volunteers: Got some time
each month
that you could dedicate to advocating on behalf of residents of nursing
homes, adult homes and assisted living facilities? You can help our
frail elderly neighbors live with dignity and enjoy a decent quality of
life by becoming a New York State
Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP)
volunteer. MHA will provide a free
36-hour course of training and support. The next training session begins
Monday October 20, 2008. To be eligible for the training, please call
MHA’s Margaret Hadad for an interview at (914) 345-5900 ext.
298.
- Employment opportunities at MHA: MHA continues to initiate new
programs and expand existing ones. Descriptions of our current job openings are updated on an
ongoing basis. Check frequently for information about job opportunities
for yourself or someone you know.
- We have just posted information from the New York State Office of
Children and Family Services, the New York City’s Mayor’s Office and
more than three dozen county local social services commissioners about a
statewide campaign to stop
co-sleeping deaths. Read more about the Westchester Task Force on Child Abuse and
Neglect, a coalition that brings together people and organizations
who are concerned with child abuse and neglect in Westchester.
- We have just updated the Geriatric Mental Health Alliance
of New York pages by adding five new reports:

Mental Health Alliance of New York pages is an Issues Brief entitled
“Meeting the Mental Health Challenges of the Elder Boom.”
- We are pleased to welcome a new member to our Board of Directors.

- We have just added a new press release giving information on our MHA on the move event and Gala
Dance Celebration, both to be held on Saturday, September 20, 2008.

- The Sterling Club members
and staff will be taking their annual vacation, this year a 3-day,
2-night extravaganza to the Nevele Hotel and Resort in the Catskills.
This is their largest trip with 56 participants including members from
Rutherford House and the supported apartment program. The Club is also
proud to announce that 10 members and Director, Sharon Caplan, graduated
from their first Tae Kwan Do class, completing the requirements to
receive their white belts (from no belt). Participants received trophies
and a certificate for their efforts in this wellness program.

- MHA Assistant Executive Directors Caroline Turner and Carla Quail
were interviewed on Bob Marrone’s radio show on WVOX, 1460 AM on June 13
and spoke about the upcoming MHA on the move…Run, Walk, Dance! This
family-friendly event scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2008 will
raise vital funds for MHA, create community awareness and help eliminate
the stigma associated with mental illness. To learn more, visit our events page.
- Dr. Barbara Bernstein, MHA’s Director of Education and Training, was
recently featured on a segment called “Middle Class Squeeze: Impacting
Your Health,” on the Richard French Live show, a news program on the RNN
cable station. She spoke about how the economy can affect mental health.

- MHA’s CEO/Executive Director, Dr. Amy Kohn recently had two media
interviews. On June 2nd, she spoke about MHA’s various services, new
initiatives and what makes the agency unique with Marsha Gordon,
President/CEO of the Business Council of Westchester on her radio show
on WVOX, 1460 AM. On a later date, she spoke with state senator Suzi
Oppenheimer about myths and facts regarding mental health on her show,
“Report from the Senate.”
- In May, Ruthanne Abramovitch and Caroline Turner, two of MHA’s
Assistant Executive Directors, were interviewed on Bob Marrone’s radio
show on WVOX, 1460 AM where they discussed MHA’s Home at Last Campaign,
our Spring Appeal to raise funds for our housing services. To learn more

- MHA is pleased to welcome Shareen Kneeshaw, PhD as the new Program
Director of the Northern Westchester Counseling Center (NWCC). For more

- School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE) Trainings
scheduled: New York State requires that individuals applying for
certification as teacher assistants, teachers, pupil personnel services
professionals and school administrators complete training regarding
school violence prevention and intervention. MHA, an approved New York
State provider, will be offering the SAVE course twice in 2008: on
June 4 and September 10. Sign up now!
