Counseling and Support Services for Children and Adolescents
Children and adolescents who are experiencing emotional, social, behavioral, or academic challenges may benefit from mental health treatment. Knowing when to seek a mental health consultation is often difficult for parents. Mental health treatment is often helpful when a child or adolescent has difficulty managing sad, angry or anxious feelings, or is coping with the stress of a traumatic event, including the death of a loved one or has experienced an abusive situation. Changes in a child’s or adolescent’s usual patterns – including eating, sleeping, school performance, and choice of friends – may also signal significant difficulties that warrant a mental health consultation.
MHA professionals work with children and their families to flexibly meet their needs. MHA staff are trained in a variety of best practices to deliver mental health services that address the needs of youth.
Services
MHA’s clinics are licensed by the New York State Office of Mental health and provide individual, group, family and medication therapy services for children and adolescents. Specialized treatment is available to address the challenges of depression, anxiety, difficulties with attention and concentration, and behavioral difficulties; as well as for managing the impact of physical or sexual abuse, serious illness or death in the family. Specific services are also available for youth who have serious emotional and behavioral problems. MHA’s specially trained social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and case managers work closely with parents to improve the lives of their children and families.
Individual psychotherapy and play therapy for young children: Young children benefit from one-to-one contact with a therapist who may use play therapy techniques to help a child express feelings and describe experiences through the use of toys, games, dolls, drawing and other techniques.
Individual psychotherapy for older children and adolescents: Through individual therapy, older children and adolescents can learn to identify and discuss feelings, to manage challenges in their lives, and to change problem behaviors.
Medication therapy: Medication may be a useful adjunct to your child’s treatment plan. Decisions about medication are made by parents working collaboratively with a psychiatrist who is a specially trained medical doctor.
Group treatment for Children and Adolescents: Group treatment provides a valuable tool for youth to share their experiences and learn to manage difficult situations through interactions peers who are facing similar challenges, guided by a therapist.
Family treatment: Family treatment addresses problems and solutions from the perspective of the family. Family members work with a therapist to learn to identify each other’s needs and improve the way the family functions together.
