Section 8 Rental Housing Vouchers

The Section 8 Rental Housing Voucher is the federal government's program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to rent decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Since the rental assistance is provided to you or your family, you or your family have the choice to lease privately owned housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments, providing the housing falls at or below fair market rents.

Is It For Me?

To be eligible for rental assistance or what is called a Section 8 Rental Housing Voucher, you must be within the household income levels established by the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) based on family size and geography. In Westchester County, the maximum annual income by household size is as follows:

Household Size Maximum Annual Income

    1 person $37,300
    2 person  $42,600
    3 person  $47,950
    4 person  $53,250
    5 person $57,550
    6 person  $61,800

Additional information is available at www.huduser.com

What is the Benefit?

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you generally pay 30% of your monthly-adjusted income towards rent and HUD pays the rest.

When Do the Benefits Apply?

Since the demand for housing assistance often exceeds the limited resources available to HUD and local housing agencies, long waiting periods are common. In fact, a housing agency may close its waiting list when it has more families and individuals on the list than can be assisted in the near future. To learn more please call 914-995-2415 or contact CVR New York, the Westchester Housing Choice Voucher Program local administrator. More information is available on their web site at www.cvrnewyork.com.

Is There Any Cost to Me?

You are responsible for the portion of the rent not covered by the Section 8 rental Housing Voucher.

Who Provides the Benefit?

The program is administered on a local level.  CVR New York is the local administrator for Westchester County Section 8.  More information is available on their web site at www.cvrnewyork.com.
