Therapy and Support for Adults
MHA offers individualized treatment and support services for adults who are experiencing the full range of mental health concerns – from coping with stresses, depression or anxiety to managing challenging symptoms of psychiatric illnesses. Individuals seek mental health treatment for assistance managing distressing feelings and behaviors; or often at the suggestion of a loved one, medical provider, lawyer or employer.
MHA’s clinics are licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health and provide individual, family and group therapy. Medication therapy may be a part of any of these treatments. Specialized treatment is available for adults with depression, anxiety, trauma histories and more serious mental illnesses. Services are provided by master's level licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, or psychiatrists.
Individual Psychotherapy Individuals work with their therapists to identify personal goals and develop a plan to achieve them. Meetings are usually one-to-one, but may include family or other significant individuals. Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes.
For a further description of the therapy process, please see the section entitled What To Expect From Mental Health Treatment.
Medication Therapy Medication therapy may be part of a complete treatment plan. In collaboration with a psychiatrist, each individual decides whether medication to reduce distressing feelings or behaviors or to manage symptoms is appropriate. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who is specially trained to work with psychological and behavioral difficulties. For more information on medication therapy, please see the section entitled What To Expect From Mental Health Treatment.
Group Treatment Group treatment is an effective way to address problems with others who share similar difficulties. A therapist leads the group discussion and makes sure that all group members have the opportunity to participate and learn in the group.
Family Treatment Concerns that impact families may be best addressed through family treatment. Families work with their therapist to identify the issues underlying family stress and problems, and to resolve those issues. Family members learn more effective ways to meet each other’s needs and to improve family communication.
