The Sterling Community Center (SCC)
The Sterling Community Center (SCC) is a recovery-oriented community-based center. At SCC, adults who have been diagnosed with serious mental illnesses find mutual support as they work toward their unique goals by learning new skills, developing social networks, participating in volunteer activities, and developing opportunities for paid employment. Adults 17 years and older, residing in New York State who have a psychiatric diagnosis, are welcome to participate in SCC activities.
Services
SCC offers an array of classes as well as volunteer work activities throughout the week. Evening and weekend social activities include those held on-site as well as low-cost off site activities.
SCC activities help individuals identify and work toward their personal goals. SCC offers both time-limited and ongoing classes and activities related to health and wellness, to employment and education, and to developing social networks including:
- Smoking Cessation
- Nutrition Education, Health and Weight Management
- Yoga, Tae Kwon Do, Mindfulness and Meditation
- Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP)
- Spirituality and Recovery
- Making Health Connections
- Life Problem Solving
- Budget
- Art Workshop
- Peer Support Group
- Job Readiness Supported Employment
- Computer Lab, Introduction to Microsoft Word, Introduction to the Internet
- Academic Preparation
- Book Group
- Food Pantry
- Benefits Consultation
Lunch is offered at no-charge and time-limited transportation is available for people who live in the White Plains area.
Staff members who are trained in recovery-oriented person-centered service delivery collaborate with participants to design and provide Center programs.
