Parent Tip of the Week: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that may develop following a time of extreme stress. As a parent, you want to be able to quickly recognize if your child is experiencing symptoms of this illness. If left untreated it may lead to changes in your child’s behaviors, emotions, thinking and even his or her physical health.

Symptoms of PTSD can be similar to other common disorders in children such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression. However, typical signs of PTSD include:

  • Impulsivity

  • Attention deficit

  • Depression

  • Emotional numbing

  • Social Avoidance

  • Dissociation

  • Insomnia

  • Aggressive behavior

  • Poor academic achievement

  • Delayed mental development
