Parent Tip of the Week: Bullying

Bullying is a serious problem – for the victims and also for those who bully. Read on and learn what bullying is, why kids bully in the first place and how you can help your child if he or she is being bullied.

Bullying…

…Is when a child verbally or physically intimidates another child. It can happen anywhere, and it usually takes place when there are no adults around.

…Occurs when one child is stronger and/or older than the other child.

…Can make victimized children feel depressed, ashamed and upset.

Kids bully because…

…It allows children to dominate others and get what they want, whenever they want.

…They don’t know better. Violence within families can cause kids to become violent and bully others.

If your child is a victim…

…Have a loving conversation: Ask them how they feel about the situation; comfort them.

…Do not blame the child who is being bullied.

…Tell your child that it’s okay to ask you or another adult for help.

…Talk to your child’s teacher, counselor or principal and bring this problem to their attention.
